Irene Cox was born to the late Jacob Lewis and Edith Virginia Coley Lewis on November 17, 1924 in Pikeville, NC.  She moved to New Jersey where she met and married the love of her life James Cox, Sr. and to this union three children were born. 

On September 23, 2017, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ welcome Irene Cox with open hands into the pearly gates of heaven.   

And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.  Revelations 21:10

She was a devoted wife and mother and often shared her joy and words of wisdom with others. She enjoyed cooking her Thanksgiving feast which she often shared with friends and family members, gardening, watching her soap operas and reading her daily newspaper from front to back.

Mrs. Irene Cox was preceded in death by her husband, James Cox, Sr. and son, James Cox, Jr., 2 sisters - Odessa Lewis and Virginia Lewis; and 3 brothers - J.C. Howell, Alonzo Lewis and Bobby Lewis; and 3 sister-in-laws- Mary Howell, Daisy Lewis and Dorothy Lewis. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Jacqueline Lewis Greer (Earl) of Columbus, Ohio; and Shirley Marshall (David) of West Orange, NJ; a sister, Eva Lewis of Pikeville, NC; and 1 sister-in-law Marie Lewis of Goldsboro, 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grand children, with special thanks and recognition to devoted niece, Carolyn Lewis (Gregory) of Pikeville, NC; dearest nephew Melvin (Doris) Lewis of Goldsboro, NC; care givers (Shelia, Thelma, Blanch, Rebecca, and Jackie) of Goldsboro, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
