Dorothy Mcknabb Obituary

Dorothy Lynn Mcknabb was born September 24, 1941 to the late Clyde and Annie Lynn. She was preceded in death by her daughter Lori Mcknabb, brother William (Bud) Lynn and brother Randy Smith. She passed away on November 7, 2018 at Wayne UNC Health Care with her daughter Lisa, brother Clyde and caregiver Pam by her side.

She graduated from Dillard High School in 1959. This was a new beginning for her to be self-supporting and helping her mother financially was her top priority. She relocated to New York where she held miscellaneous jobs, including working at a hotel in the beauty salon, working in a factory, and at New York telephone company (Ma Bell). While there she worked as a Directory Assistant training new operators and other special projects. During the last 3 1/2 years at Ma Bell, she worked as a time assignment clerk in the central payroll office.  In July 1974, she moved back to Goldsboro, N.C. to take care of her mother whose health was failing. In August 1974, she took a position at Wayne Memorial Hospital (Wayne UNC Health Care) as a telephone operator, emergency room secretary and relief person in the admitting office. Then she became a supervisor over the insurance department. Her health began to fail and she retired after working there for 37 years.

She became a member of St. James AME Zion Church and an active member of the Usher Board. She loved working in the kitchen serving breakfast and participating in other events. When her health started to decline she was unable to attend.  She loved to say, “I’m in church every time the doors open”.  She enjoyed her Sunday dinners with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The grandchildren loved her turkey wings, hot wings, dressing and butter beans. She could never make enough for them. Her favorite place to be was the beach. Lying on the beach, taking in the sun brought her so much joy. She loved to travel with her sister Annie Ruth.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories to daughter, Lisa M. Stewart, 5 grandchildren Daniel, Kaliliah , Victoria, Lynn all of Goldsboro N.C. and Martika of Washington D.C. and 8 great-grandchildren.  Three sisters Annie R. Smith of Columbus, Ohio, IIanda (Oliejoel) Dancy, of Charlotte, N.C., Velecia (Will) Middleton of Frederick, Maryland, two brothers Clyde Lynn of Greensboro, N.C., and Joseph Smith of Perris, CA , very special cousin, Vivian Spruill and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The family will be receiving friends at her daughter, Mrs. Lisa McKnabb Stewart's residence located at 101 Summerdale Dr. Pikeville, NC 27863.
