Edward G. Dean was born on December 7th, 1939 in Buchanan, Liberia. The son of Rev. Archie G. Dean Sr. and mother Mattie Yassa. He was the youngest of five brothers and one sister. He was mostly raised by his beloved grandmother. Edward attended school, own & operated a taxicab service and briefly worked at Hatton Diamond in Monrovia, Liberia.
Once arriving in the U.S. he lived in N.Y. and later moved to N.J. in (1973) where he met and married his late wife/soulmate Charlene Dean. Edward worked 15+ years at Wonderbread/Hostess Continental Bakery as a baker/machinist before retiring and settling down in Pikeville, N.C.
He was a proud man who cared deeply for his family. Outspoken and outgoing, he loved to cook pepper soup, palm butter and cassava leaf and crack jokes on his family. Stern but also a gentle soul he would always open his home and lend you an ear to anyone who needed it. He loved to watch golf, tennis and talk about politics. He was a protector, a provider, a mentor, a counselor and a friend.
He is survived by his six children, Archie Dean (deceased), Bobby Dean, Estella Dean (deceased) of Monrovia, Liberia. Melody Whitfield of Pikeville, N.C.,Todd Whitfield of Newark,N.J. and Lisa Dean of Pikeville, N.C; eight grandchildren, Devonte Thomas-Whitfield, Abraham Dean, Chyniah Thomas-Whitfield, Ah'zari Lott-Whitfield, Angel Dean, Ah'Zohne Lott-Whitfield, Todmid Plant-Whitfield, Ah'Zeyyla Lott-Whitfield; and one great grandchild Edward Dean. And a host other relatives and close friends.
