On July 16th, 2020 Gladys Rouse peacefully departed this life while in care at Spring Creek Rehabilitation & Nursing Care Center. Born August 4th, 1930, Gladys was the daughter of Loza and Annie Lee Darden. She was born in Wayne County, North Carolina where she completed her primary education and graduated from Dillard High School.
Soon after, she met and married Alex Rouse Sr. She had her first son Alex Rouse Jr. and moved with her family from North Carolina to Brooklyn, New York. Two years after, she and Alex Sr. welcomed their baby boy James (Jammie) Rouse into their family. Alex Sr. and Alex Jr. both predeceased Gladys.
Gladys was a hard worker and an excellent seamstress, so it was almost impossible to keep her out of the workforce. She joined I.L.G.W.U.'s Blouse, Skirt, & Sportswear Workers Union Local 23-25 and never looked back. She worked as a professional seamstress until her retirement in 1995.
During her retirement years, she volunteered her time to the Albany Houses Tenant Patrol. She received many accolades for her dedication and service to the building in which she lived for over sixty years. Gladys also enjoyed going to the food pantry and distributing food to the senior citizens in her building who were unable to get out and go for themselves. She also relished when family came over to her home to celebrate her birthdays and various holidays. She was very generous and was always ready to give whatever she had to those in need of her help.
After eighty-nine faithful years of service to her family and friends, Gladys is now resting peacefully in the hand of our Lord.
Gladys will be missed by all her family anf friends. She leaves to cherish her memory her son James (Jammie) Rouse, sister Hattie Bell Williamson, Grandchildren Amira Chantel Beatty (Tookie) & Grandson-In-Law Stacy Beatty Jr., Kimberly Rouse, and Andre Rouse. Great Grandchildren: Alexis, India, Holly,Holland, and Alexus, and a host of Great-Great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
