Kusloshail Renee Thompson, affectionately known as “Shay Shay” was born on December 30, 1973 in Goldsboro, NC. She was the daughter of the late Janice Louise Thompson and Jerry M. Sykes. Shay was reared by her late grandmother Almareada Fields and her mother’s twin Minnie Louise Thompson, who she would call her mother. Shay Shay peacefully departed this life with her brother and husband by her side on January 31, 2022 at Wayne UNC Hospital.
Shay attended Goldsboro City Schools and was a proud graduate of the GHS Class of 1992. She earned an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Wayne Community College in 2005.
Shay was employed at O’Berry Center from 1995—2001. After completing her degree she worked as a Lead Teacher at Wages. Later she returned to O’Berry Center (2009-2014) where she worked in various capacities until her health failed.
Shay was married to Christopher Ricardo “Rick” Mitchell on July 1, 2016. A devoted and loving wife and mother, Shay enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking delicious meals and traveling. She was well known for her cookouts, her special dishes including lasagna, her poetry, laughter and sense of humor. Shay dearly loved her family, classmates, her cousins and friends. She worshipped at various churches in the area and ultimately decided to make Christ Memorial Church her home.
Shay was preceded in death by her mother Janice, grandparents James and Almareada Fields and John W. and Sadie Sykes; aunts Vivian (Charles) Best, Tia Bryant, Florence S. Exum; uncles James Thompson, Anthony Davis, Floyd Fennell, Vernon Sykes, Sr., Floyd Sykes Sr., and John W. Sykes Jr.
She leaves a legacy of memories with her husband Rick; children Billy R. Hamm III, Yas Nakia J. Parker, T’Vauyah Young, Chrishaunna Mitchell, Courtney Mitchell and four stepchildren; her father Jerry (Deborah) Sykes, “Min Min” Minnie L. Thompson, Tom and Shirley Mitchell; siblings Lavarius M. Thompson (Sarah Guerra), Jermaine R. Washington, Jared M. Williams, Aaron J. Sykes, Jacob F. (Chardae) Sykes, Johnathan D. Sykes, Michael C. (Queandra) Sykes and Tyra D. Appleby; grandchildren Tristan, Karter, Kaleb and eight step grandchildren; aunts Helen Thompson, Gloria Cox, Minnie Thompson, Laura Carmichael, Bernita Fields, Patricia Fields, Teresa McKinnon, Kimnetta Coley, Yvonne Williams, Virginia Taylor, Doris King, Catherlene Linton, Alberta Barnes, Helen Sykes, Joyce Sykes and Shirley Sykes; uncles Paul Taylor and Forrest M. Harner; great aunts Pauline Flowers (New York), Betty )Pete) Statan (Tarboro, NC), Janice Fennell, Dolly Fields, Dorothy Reid (Goldsboro), Emma Sykes (Washington, DC) and Mary Brown (Goldsboro); great uncles Zeno Mitchell, Milford Mitchell, Raphael Mitchell, Pete Hodges and Herman Hodges; nieces Akairyah, T’Kia, Aniyah, Emoni, Amira, Alaia, Amaree, Cadence and Michaela; nephews Montrego, Rahsjoh, Jaylen, Aqueru, Jaylan, Gabriel, Israel, Abijah, Ansel and Mason; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends, a special family friend Lucy Graham "Aunt Plum" (LaGrange) and a loving “grandmother” Ms. Barbara Kornegay.
