William Sampson Obituary

William Dwight Sampson, was born May 21, 1961 to the late Ellen Delois Sampson and Calvin Sampson Sr., of Calypso, North Carolina.  He departed this life to join his Lord and Savior early afternoon on October 9, 2019.

He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Calvin Sampson Jr. of Goldsboro, NC, and Anthony Brooks Sampson of South Orange NJ; 2 sisters, Deborah B. Moore, and Mary Ellen Sampson-Peterson both of Goldsboro, NC.

He leaves to cherish his memories his fiancé of the home, Teresa Hines, Goldsboro, NC. One daughter, Misha Sampson of Goldsboro, NC; Two brothers, Lewis Howard (Cowania) Sampson of Goldsboro NC; and Robert Thaxton (Joann) Sampson of Tampa, Florida; Three sisters, Millie Anita Boyd, of Goldsboro, NC; Deronda Nae Sampson, and Althea Renee (William) Grantham, both of Goldsboro, NC.

Dwight’s life work consisted of nothing short of being a free lance painter and small odd jobs perfectionist.  He loved to paint!!  It was his passion his craft and it sustained and brought much joy and satisfaction to him throughout his life.  It seems there was never a conversation that did not start or end with him telling of his latest projects or towns in which his “paintbrush” stroked the walls of many local homes, churches and businesses.   He would tell of the many people that wanted him to paint for them.  A story he would fondly reflect on, and there were many.  From Wayne County, its’ surrounding communities all the way down to the coastline where he was contracted to paint beach houses.  He’d say, “girl down there, they treated me like family”, then, he’d laugh and say, “huh, the money wont bad either”.

Our brother was no stranger to those he met and greeted on a daily basis.  He was a great friend, brother, and uncle.  He was a man of little material means, but that never stopped him from making suggestions about what you should do with your life or how you should live it.  He was a big supporter of all his family, his daughter and grandchildren, and especially his nieces and nephews.  They loved his sweet hearted spirit. And oh yeah, family events meant, “it’s time for… “horseplay”.  It was nothing for him to put one of them or a sibling in a “headlock” or be caught singing and tell them he could sing better than any of them could.  We could reflect on every aspect of his life however, we want you to remember “all the best that he gave us everyday, and that was his “unconditional love”.

His life will be sadly and profoundly missed.  We, the family his Fiancé Teresa, and daughter Misha remain to express his love and appreciation to all of you for the years of love, joy and patience and kindness you’ve shown to him and our family.   We would especially like to thank all the 3rd floor ICU & 6th floor staff at Wayne Memorial UNC Hospital for their patience care and concern during our time of need.
